Containers are up by 9% this week; air cargo is down by 1%


We are sharing the latest version of the cargo report.
This will be the second-to-last report of the year.

Some highlights discussed this week include the following:

1. International air freight to OR Tambo continues to grow:
a. For the full month of November, international air cargo is up by +20% (m/m) and +21% (y/y), which makes November a record month since our stats began.
b. Despite the record throughput this week, smooth cargo operations were still curtailed by operational constraints – this week was affected by hail and water damage.
2. Global container port throughput:
a. Drewry’s “Global Container Port Throughput Index” decreased -1,4% (m/m) in September, but remains up +4,0% (y/y).
b. Elsewhere, the respective regional indices indicated the following movements for September:
i. The Greater China Container Index fell -3,1% (m/m), but remains up by +3,5% (y/y).
ii. The North American Container Index fell -3,9% (m/m) to 115,5 points, down -1,0% (y/y).
iii. The European Container Index rose +2,1% (m/m), up +6,0% (y/y) to 113,6 points.
