New Minister Creecy outlines freight logistics reforms to Exporters Western Cape

Our most recent EWC event brought together exporters, logistics stakeholders, and industry leaders for an insightful discussion with Minister of Transport Barbara Creecy on the future of South Africa’s freight logistics system and the reforms aimed at improving rail and port performance.
EWC Chairman Terry Gale welcomed the Minister and reiterated the importance of strong collaboration between industry and government, noting that efficient logistics are critical to growing exports and enhancing South Africa’s global competitiveness.
Minister Creecy outlined the progress being made through the National Freight Logistics Roadmap, including the opening of the rail network to private operators, the establishment of the Transnet Infrastructure Manager, and the creation of the Transport Economic Regulator. A key highlight was the announcement that private rail operators are expected to begin operating on the freight network from April next year.
The Minister also acknowledged the challenges facing South Africa’s logistics sector, while highlighting ongoing investments at the Port of Cape Town, including expanded terminal capacity and new equipment aimed at improving efficiency.
A recurring theme throughout the evening was the importance of partnership and a customer-focused approach to reform. Encouragingly, Minister Creecy noted that significant efforts are being made to strengthen collaboration with industry and improve service delivery.
The evening concluded on an optimistic note, with the Minister reminding attendees that while meaningful reform takes time, progress is underway. Quoting a Chinese proverb, she remarked: “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.”
