What a fitting way to wrap up the year! At our final event of 2024, Terry opened the evening with promising news from his recent meeting with the new Minister of Transport. Prof. Havenga shared highlights from the past two years—the busiest of his career—he captivated us with an anecdote about his humble beginnings as a parcel deliverer and how that lead to his involvement in the founding of Transnet years ago. Drawing from his vast experience, he offered a unique perspective on the challenges facing Transnet today and their far-reaching impact on the logistics industry, the South African economy, and the country as a whole.
From the critical need to refocus on rail infrastructure to the consequences of neglecting railway integration within South Africa’s logistics framework, Prof. Havenga emphasised the urgent call for restructuring Transnet. His insights on the pitfalls of cross-subsidisation and the broader implications for the industry underscored the need for immediate and strategic action.
