We’re back!

This has been quite a journey and once again, the reality is that we live in an incredible city and province, however, it is up to us to ensure that this euphoric situation continues!

One only needs to step outside our borders to realise the grass is not greener on the other side.

The Invest in Africa Summit in the Hague opened my eyes to the interest the Netherlands has in assisting us in growing our economy and we can certainly learn from the Dutch on this.

Taking into account the size of the country, they certainly play above their weight, it is something to behold how they have grown the country by 18% by land reclamation, with more planned.

The number one take away was the incredible public transport system, a basic one-stop shop, utilising the OV-chipkaart for all methods of transport be it ferry, rail, tram or bus throughout the country – one tap of the card opens your world.

This system has been proposed by the CoCT but red tape appears to be hold up the implantation of this, as there are too may role players involved.

The adage of better together does not appear to be in the South African vocabulary!

Also had the opportunity to meet with Harold Roosenboom, Harbour Master, Port of Rotterdam, who oversees 40km of riverside port and the challenges face and how  they are overcome – lesson learnt – working together with one common vision – we can!

Rotterdam is impacted by the cold (as in freezing) winds blowing in from the North Sea, yet still attains its targets and is still one of the most efficient ports in the world.

Back home, the stats for week 29th April – 5th May as follows:

  • CTCT : 15328 TEU handled, 16757 target; 13 GCH 25 SWH; Hedwig Schulte ranging 14.6 hours; 5.6 hours fog delay, 549 rail moves stack occupancy 38%
  • CTMPT : 2497 TEU Handled 2088 target, 14 GCH 14 SWH 18% stack occupancy
  • FPT : Berth Occupancy 62%, 9 vessels handled: 5 Multi Cargo 3 container 1 Fruit, 2602 TEU, 3303.01 MT Dry Bulk, 1000.5 General Cargo B/B; 3785 pallets fruit

Look forward to seeing you on the 21st !
