There are 2 ways of addressing the current news that the PoCT has reached rock bottom status, in accordance with the World Bank data and it is interesting to note industry’s comments on this.

Even within our own city and province the opinions differentiate vastly, however we must unite to work in co-operation and collaboration, with the same vision and goal in mind and that we will place the PoCT  in its rightful place, near the top the league.

From an Exporters Western Cape, the question is what was the goal of the NCC?  What did it achieve? Much talk, but no action? On many occasions, EWC requested updates on the functionality of this committee and was met with no comment.

In fact, as a non-partisan organisation privately funded thought it would be prudent to be part of this committee, which was met with silence! Perhaps the more than 50 years of experience in the industry did not count for anything?!

Our port stats for week 23 (03 – 09 June) as follows:

  • CTCT : 12013 TEU target 14054; 12 GCH 22 SWH, 33% night shift; 31% stack occupancy, only 144 rail moves as 2 of the 3 lines of the lines into the port, broken! TFR on site repairing
  • CTMPT : 158 TEU target 1123 – TEU moved on Monday 3rd only – equipment challenges had heavy impact here
  • FPT:  42% stack occupancy; 7 vessels handled : 3 Multi cargo, 3 container & 1 Steel B/B :380 TEU Handled, 212.08 B/B; Steel B/B : 3797.83 MT; Fruit B/B 1534 pallets
  • Equipment Challenges : CTCT LC!, LC3 & LC5 out of action, LC1 should be restored soon, 23 RTG’s operational, 1 out of service should be coming on stream soon; 3 out of 4 straddles available – 1 waiting for spares

General Consensus:   From the current perspective there is only way and that is UP! Let us show the world what we can achieve with or backs against the wall – we’ve done it before and we can and will do it again!

Please note our next function is Wednesday 26th June, when Nedbank economist, Crystal Huntley, will address our concerns going forward on the GNU and its impact on our export industry.

Invitations will be in your inbox tomorrow!
