SPEAKERS:

April’s Exporters Western Cape event brought members together for a highly engaging evening focused on both practical customs insights and an innovative new temperature control logistics solutions.

As per usual Terry Gale warmly welcomed everyone and gave much-appreciated insight on several pressing matters within the export industry. He reassured attendees that he continues to work tirelessly behind the scenes on potential solutions and expressed gratitude for the ongoing support that makes EWC a vital, independent force in the export sector.

Always a welcome presence, customs specialist Clifford Evans, shared practical customs-related updates—reminding us that often, the most useful information isn’t what’s new, but what needs closer attention. While there were no major new announcements to report, he provided clear, detailed guidance into long-standing customs procedures that still require close attention and might have escaped our focus.

He gave his predictions for 2025, noting that it’s still early in the year since there has only been one engagement held with SARS so far. In his view, the focus will likely remain on compliance—reinforcing existing policies rather than introducing sweeping changes.

He touched on the importance of ensuring declarations, VAT numbers and company details are correct and consistent, noting how these can easily be updated through eFiling. Clifford also explored several technical areas including advance payments, the AEO program, licensing and accreditation, and navigating letters of intent. His deep knowledge and willingness to answer audience questions made his session both informative and reassuring.

Next, Sean Petzer introduced two forward-thinking logistics solutions he is invloved with. The first was an innovative thermal packaging system designed to safeguard temperature-sensitive goods using a passive, eco-friendly approach. Offering benefits like cost savings, reduced waste, and detailed shipment tracking—including live GPS, humidity control, and tamper detection—this solution is poised to make a significant impact across industries not only limited to pharmaceuticals (as has been the most used industry) but also industry such as high-end food products etc.

Sean also spoke about pallet porter solution, which boasts with one-person assembly and enables double stacking—an efficiency not previously possible. In addition to improving transport safety during high-risk scenarios, these innovations aim to reduce environmental impact while supporting greater logistical flexibility across air, sea, and road freight.

The evening wrapped up with a few exciting hints about the upcoming May event, promising even more engaging content and networking opportunities.

As always, EWC continues to foster meaningful conversations, encourage innovation, and bring the industry together—one inspiring event at a time.
