Logistics and customs developments in focus at Exporters Western Cape event
SPEAKERS:
- Gavin Kelly – CEO of the Road Freight Association (RFA)
- Clifford Evans – Customs Specialist
In a room filled with exporters and logistics professionals gathering for another engaging Exporters Western Cape evening, our members gained valuable insights into the evolving logistics landscape and the latest developments in customs and trade compliance.
Gavin Kelly, CEO of the Road Freight Association, shared his perspective on the future of South Africa’s freight network, emphasising that road and rail should be viewed as complementary rather than competing modes of transport. He highlighted the importance of restoring rail capacity while recognising the vital role road freight continues to play in keeping supply chains moving. Gavin also addressed key industry challenges, including organised cargo crime, ageing infrastructure, the growing importance of cybersecurity, and the development of integrated freight cities to improve efficiency and competitiveness.
Clifford Evans, customs specialist at the South African Freight and Logistics Association (SAFLA), provided members with valuable updates on the ever-changing customs environment. He unpacked the latest developments surrounding the proposed Pre-Export Verification of Conformity (PVoC) programme, the opportunities presented by the China-Africa Economic Partnership arrangement, and the certification requirements needed for qualifying South African exports to benefit from duty-free access to China. Clifford also discussed progress toward the National Single Window initiative, highlighting its potential to simplify trade processes through greater digital integration across government departments.
Closing the evening, EWC Chairman Terry Gale reinforced the importance of creating opportunities for exporters to engage directly with industry experts and remain informed about the regulatory and operational changes shaping the sector.
The evening served as another valuable reminder that collaboration, knowledge sharing, and staying ahead of industry developments remain essential as South African exporters continue to navigate an increasingly dynamic global trade environment.
